Positive and Negative Effects of weekend storm - Tony

San Bernardino Mountain ski resorts finally opened for skiers this weekend. They have the biggest, best snowfall of the season. After a mostly dry winter, more than 9 inches of new snow fell on snow summit and Bear Mountain.

The heavy snowstorm toppled trees onto cars and knocked out electricity to thousands of people. However, Big Bear Mountain resorts have been waiting for this snowfall. A crowd of more then 8,000 were at the two ski resorts this last weekends the arrival of snow has had a positive effect to the ski resorts. Though the storm was beneficial to the ski resorts, the rainfall is expected to bring more havoc to the Inland empire. Flash-flood warnings were in effect for the Inland Valleys as well as mountain areas below 6000 feet.

Electricity was knocked out of more than 21,000 customers of Riverside Public Utilities when lightning struck a transformer early Saturday. This  inclueded 520 customers in the San Bernardino Mountains community of Forest Falls. Electical crews are having differently getting to the area because many roads are washed out. Many trees have fallen onto cars and house and into streets because of the rains that caused soaked ground and high winds which were too much for some trees.

In Los Angeles, evacuation orders remained in effect for hundreds of homes where fires had burned away vegetation that holds soil in place. The rainfall this weekend was so badly needed, due to the drought that has grown to a great crisis in California, especially for the farming industry. However, we will need many more storms this season to really help the drought situation according to weather forecasters.

Approximately 1,200 homes in Azusa, Glendora and Monrovis have been under evacuation orders, due to destructive flows of rain form the San Gabriel Mountains. The worst of the storm is over for now, but people who have evacuated their homes are asked to be patient before returning too soon. Over all, the weekend storm brought about positive results which included snow in the mountains for the skiers, and the much awaited rainfall that is needed for our terrible drought conditions, and also for the farming industry, of course, with every positive note there is a negative one, which includes flash floods, people having to evacuate their homes because of landslides, trees falling and people being without electricity. All in all, we got the start of a much needed rainfall.

In my opinion the storm had more positive effects than negative ones. We got a much needed rainfall that helps our drought and the farming in the industry in California. This is a good start to help our drought but we will need many more storms like this one the snowfall in the Big Bear Mountain Resorts, brought many happy skier to the mountain's area. I hope we continue to get more rainfall, so the people in state of California will not have to be concerned about lack of water.
