Riverside's newly remodeled convention center - Tony

Riverside's newly remodeled convention center has more than 66,816 square feet. The cost to upgrade the convention center is $43.6 million. The 40 percent larger exhibit hll has hundreds of smart phone charging stations bringing it up to date with 21st century convention needs.
At the present time there are more than 42 bookings from March to July 2014, these include religious conferences, dance competitions and a home show. The upcoming events include a Microsoft conference, helicopter expo and comic convention.
The local attractions include Fox theater, downtown pedestrian mall, Mission Inn and the Riverside Museum. The city is hoping with the new convention center it will bring more people to our city which will help drive more business. The restaurants and businesses near the convention center are hoping with all the people attending the conferences at the convention center will generate more business to the community.
The plans for updating the convention center have been in the making for nearly a decade, the convention center originally opened in 1976 and had its last major touch up in the late 1990's, it was overdue for a major transformation. The convention center has been redesigned with a larger exhibit hall, two balloons, more small meeting rooms, a modern kitchen, a large escalator in a Riverside city building.
The furnishings in the convention center are cherry wood paneling and an array of carpet patterds in brown, beige and colonial blue which they hope to remind people of the past as a boutique bitel. The center has been set up with wireless Internet hundreds or charging points for smart phones and tablets, and lighting and sound systems that the convention center more attractive to people. With all the upgrades the Riverside Convention Center officials hope to put the new conventing center in a belter position to compete with convention centers in Ontario and Pasadena as well as the Pechanga Resort and Casiono near Temecula. They are hoping to attract bio-medical and pharm a centical conventions, financial service events as well as corporate meetings.
The convention center will continue to attract wedding receptions, award banquets as well as consumer trade shows but on a larger scale. At the present events are booked through 2018, which include a bridge tournament, a Mary Kay cosmetic convention and several academic competitions. Within the next 4 months more than 23,000 people are expected to Riverside for more than 31 events.
Right now industry experts are doing everything they can by attracting events with out of town visiters who book hotels. The concern right now is do we have enough hotels and rooms available to serve the center.
In my opinion the newly remodeled convention center was long overdue. It is important to keep up with the timers and to be able to compete with other big cities, such as Ontario and Pasadena. I believe that with the newly remodeled convention center, we will be able to generate more money into our community. It will help the unemployment situation, by generating more jobs, not only through the convention center itself, but through the hotels, restaurants and small business.

The Self(ie) Generation - Karen

The Self(ie) Generation

An interesting research of the Pew Research Center, shows that millennials, who are people ages 18 to 33, are moving away from traditional institutions.
The Pew Research Center founds that half of millennials describe themselves as political independents and 29% don’t follow any religion; millennials have the higher levels of student loan debt, poverty and unemployment and lower levels of wealth and personal income than the two last generations had at the same age; only 26% of millennials are married and the predecessor generation were 36% married; millennials are native digitals, who don’t need to adapt the technology and social media.
Millennials don’t like to say that they are patriotic or religious, but they are the greater gap between most other generation. Also, they are more supportive of gay rights than any other generation. Even though millennials describe themselves as independent, they say that they have become more liberal on social issues. But the olders generations took another way, they have become more conservative, one reason to explain the direct opposition is because millennials haven’t married and had a family yet. Or this could be explained by the fact that this generation is fundamentally different.
The number of millennials identified as Republicans has been decreased much more than the percent identified as Democrats. Also, millennials were the only generation who support bigger government with more services as opposed to smaller government with fewer services, and the millennials majority said that it was the government’s responsability to ensure universal health care coverage, like most people in older generations. These can be explained by the divergence that millennials are more diverse than any other generation. If you ask the majority white millennials, they disagree and still support smaller governments and reject the idea of the government’s job ensure universal health care.
Good news for Republicans, millennials opinion about abortion and guns rights are quite the same as the other generations, also millennials majotiry don’t say they are environmentalists.

In conclusion, the author says that we have been experiencing an age of liberal-minded, millennials prefer to build their social networks on digital instead of the real world. He ends with a interesting phrase “This is not only the generation of the self; it’s the generation of the selfie.”, which means that the self generation can be reflected by the amount of photos of them taken by themselves.

People’s Eating Habits--Oscar

Regarding people’s eating habits, food is a most important part in every culture. However, the food in America is not healthy. For example, fast food and sodas. Furthermore, most people have an unhealthy life style. I had an interview with my two friends: Amy and Franklin who have totally different life styles.

My friend Amy, who is freshman in Denver University, has very good life style. First of all, Amy seems to have a very good diet because she consumes mostly healthy food, such as vegetable salad, yoghourt, and beefsteak. Also, Amy goes to the gym every two days. In the weekend, Amy always practices archery in the local archery club. However, Amy goes drinking every weekend and she smokes a packet of cigarettes everyday.

On the other hand, my friend Franklin is a sophomore in Monash University in Australia. Franklin wants to lose his weight but that is too difficult. He only eats vegetable salad on breakfast sometimes. Because of traditional Chinese doctors believe lunch is most important meal everyday, he has a heavy lunch everyday. He usually eats beefsteak and Chinese noodles on his lunch. Meanwhile, he likes drinking coke and Red Bull when he eats lunch. In addition, Franklin eats fast food almost every dinner. “McDonald’s is cheaper and faster,” he explains. “ You know, I do not have much time to cook for myself.” Therefore, he never goes to the gym or does exercise. He says the only exercise he does is walk to Seven Eleven that is across the street.

As everyone knows, smoking and drinking are very bad for people’s health. Even though Amy has a healthy diet, Amy should stop smoking and drinking. As regard as Franklin’s problems, I would like give some advices to him. First, if Franklin can stop drinking any sodas or energy drinks, he will feel better. In addition, fast food is worst food around the world, so if franklin can study how to cook for himself and stop eating fast food such as KFC and McDonald’s, he will lose some weight. Also, going to the gym is a good idea because some people believe go to gym has lots of choices. However, doing exercise not only in the gym, but also in anywhere at anytime. For example, Franklin can walks to school or takes bike to school everyday and he can stop using elevator. Finally, good diet is very important for people’s health. Franklin needs more vegetables and healthy drink such as fruit juice and yoghourt.

Unfortunately, keeping healthy diet is very difficult. If Amy and Franklin do not follow my advices, they will have physical illness such as diabetes, heart disease, and obesity. If Amy does not stop smoking and drinking, she has heart disease in the future. Also, Franklin should do more exercise even though he has a healthy diet. Because of sodas and energy drinks have high sugar content, Franklin might have diabetes if he does not stop drinking sodas and energy drinks. Also, fast food is very danger because fast food leads to obesity and obesity leads to diabetes and hear disease. Therefore, my advices are good for my friends Amy and Franklin.

Some people believe that subject such as as art, music, and drama should be a part of child’s basic education. Do you agree or disagree? --Oscar

As regards subjects such as art, music, and drama, those subjects are very difficult and unusual. Some people do not interested in art, music or drama because they have no talent. Whether subjects such as art, music, and drama should be a part of child’s basic education or not has fostered a controversy among different people. From my viewpoint, the aforementioned art subjects shouldn't be a part of every child’s basic education.

First of all, studying art subjects takes students a long time. Most people believe children need a happy childhood, therefore free time activates are very important to every child. As an opponent of the issue in hand, I believe that if art subjects become basic classes, a number of students will lose a part of free time and incentive to keep their children in school. On the other hand, do more exercises outside such as play baseball, play basketball and play tennis is better than attend art class because children need to exercise in the sunshine.

Moreover, the endorsers of the foregoing assertion maintain that art subjects aren’t good for poor family. Because of studying art subjects usually needs to practice at home, every child’s family need to buy something like art supplies, instruments, and costumes. Those necessary items, as everybody knows, are very expensive, therefore poor family might not afford. If art subjects become a part of every child’s basic education, the poor children feel lower self-esteem

To sum up, I oppose the assertion that subjects such as art, music, and drama should be a port of every child’s basic education because I find the claims of the opponents of this issue more cogent that those of its upholders. While I admit that the arguments of the adherents to the claim that studying art subjects takes up most of child’s time and costs is too high.

Environmental Pollution--oscar

During the last century, the environmental has suffered from various types of human related pollution, yet people have made attempts to help revers the effects of pollution on the environment. Despite these efforts, there have been some recent environmental setbacks. There are three main causes for environmental pollution, air pollution, water pollution, and land pollution.

One cause of environmental pollution is air pollution. First of all, factories produce waste gas into air. Some factories in developing country without flue-gas desulfurization are very danger, because waste gas can cause blood pressure to rise to dangerous level. The second example is automobile exhaust. Vehicle emissions contribute 60 to 70 percent of pollution in Beijing, and there pollution usually stay in the air for three to four days.

Another cause of environmental pollution is water pollution. There are two examples. First of all, factories discharge sewage in the river and ocean. Second example is household sewage. Most of the river’s pollution today comes from untreated household sewage, such as soap, detergents, and leftover.

A third cause of environmental pollution is land pollution. Land pollution is mainly caused by the dumping of garbage everywhere and excessive mining. First is garbage. Nowadays, household waste in China can mainly be classified into four kinds: kitchen waste, toxic waste and other waste. Second example is excessive mining. People mined too much oil, natural gas and coal, and environmental damage is price.

Therefore, air pollution, water pollution and land pollution are three main causes for environmental pollution. Fortunately, there are some ways, such as use public transport, hybrid cars, build Wastewater Treatment Plants (WWTPs) and recycle garbage, can make our environmental better.

Visual Learning--Oscar

Everyone has a special learning style. For me, my major learning style is visual learning. There are three most important ways, take notes, read more books and pay attention to body language, to help students to learn better.

The first important thing is taking notes. Copying notes from blackboard is a best way to remember new information. I usually copy notes when teacher written down, because I can find questions and ask them at the time. Reviewing notes is also very important. For example I always review notes on the weekend and sort out the notes again. Because of it, I am very well prepared for next week's learning even though review notes is very boring.

The second important thing is read more books. First of all, read books can help me get more information and become a knowledgeable people. The information in the textbook is limit, so read more book especially about you major is very important. The other reason is read more books can help students study comprehensive. Different book have different information and knowledge. Read more will study more.

The last important thing is pay attention to body language. There are two points student needs to focus. Some people say“The eyes are the window to the soul.”So first of all, making eye contact with you teacher. Because teacher can guess you innermost thoughts with eye contact such like questions, new ideas or self-confidence. In addition, in a conversation, people get more than 55% information by body language. Body language makes conversation and class easier.

All in all, that three reasons show us how to visual learning and study better. I believe the visual learning is good for me.
